LOVE UNDER THE SURFACE

Sample eulogy for deceased mother – 3-4 minutes

LISTEN HERE (full text below):

Good afternoon:

There are certain women who manage to make the most out of almost nothing; women who never get the luxury of finishing school—who never have parents that see them through adulthood. They’re on their own, these women. Some have the misfortune of being separated from the loves of their lives and becoming young widows. Others become single mothers in the harshest of environments with seemingly no one there to help them. But despite all of these obstacles, these women find a way to make it. They find a way to leave a legacy strong enough to carry a generation to greatness.

My mother, Marjorie Thompson, was all of these women in her lifetime. She didn’t have it easy. Not by a longshot. She struggled to take care of all of her children after my father passed 32 years ago. My mother did the best she could with what little money she had and to this day, I still don’t know how she raised all of us with so little. But she kept a roof over our heads. She kept food on our plates and clothes on our backs. She saw to it that we never missed days of school, and that we were never without water or lights. We had no needs, only wants; and it would take us getting to adulthood to fully grasp the obstacles she overcame to make a better life for us.

My mother was one of those women who could feed five children with less than four dollars. Her strength was invisible and her courage, immeasurable.

She never said, “I love you” much. She wasn’t big on sharing things like that. And outside of her riotous, high-pitched laugh, my mother didn’t have touchy-feely moments. She was quiet. Her love was buried deep under the surface and it would only peek out in the form of home cooked meals or bedrooms meticulously prepped for our visits home. She loved us in her own way and it took time for my siblings and I to learn that her love was felt, not heard. She was a mighty mountain, that little woman.

As I stand here today, I pray that my mother will always be remembered for her strength. For her love. And for her dignity. Though we will miss her, we should all feel good knowing that she lived a full and prosperous life. As the heavens open and her spirit ascends from this earth to its final resting place, let us keep memories of her fighting spirit near to our hearts. Let us draw strength from her will to make a way despite life knocking her down repeatedly. Because she always got back up! So let’s celebrate her life and all that she taught us. Let us send her home with grace and harmony so that she can at last be reunited with her husband. And though it hurts, let us find peace in letting her go knowing that the memory of her soul will never be taken from our hearts.

Thank you. God bless you all.
